Multiple Teams · Trojan Wrestling Week 8

The Trojans grapplers traveled to Triton for the 2nd annual Hoosier North Athletic Conference (HNAC) meet. The teams competing were Culver , Caston, Knox, North Judson, Pioneer, Triton, Laville, Winamac and ourselves. This year with a few changes to our schedule we were able to wrestle all the teams. We started out the day with a very strong first round with a lot of good wins, but of course, we also had a couple losses that hurt us a little. We had half of our team in the finals with, Collin Fritz at 138, Kirk Bushong at 145, Dalton Sizemore at 152, Bryce Shepperd at 170, and Preston Toosley at 220. Battling for third place was, Camron Neeley at 126, William Garcia at 132, Austin Keefeover at 160, Brandon Stevens at 195. Dakota Tiede was in line for 5th place after he was leading in a match with the top-seeded wrestler from Triton, but was injured and wasn’t able to continue.
In the Consolation round first up for us was Camron Neeley up against a Winamac opponent. The score was tied at the end match, and unfortunately, Camron gave a takedown in overtime to lose, taking 4th place. Next up was William Garcia up against another Winamac opponent. The outcome was much better than the last with William picking up a pin, putting him in 3rd place. Austin Keefover was up against a Caston wrestler. Austin picked up a quick pin, placing him in 3rd place. Brandon Stevens was up against a Caston wrestler also, got another quick pin to place 3rd. Dakota Tiede picked up a forfeit to place 5th.
After a crossover under the spotlights, our five finalists were fired up and ready to go. First up for was Collin Fritz. Collin was up against North Judson’s Zach Bridegroom. Collin wrestled a tough match and was able to win 7-3. Next Kirk Bushong up against Laville’s Anthony Felke. After three hard periods, the score was tied 3-3. In the first overtime period, neither wrestler was able to secure a takedown. In the next two periods, they both were able to get one point each. Going into the fourth and final overtime period, Kirk was able to secure an escape in the final seconds of the match to get the win. Next up was Dalton Sizemore up against a Triton opponent. dalton had wrestled him befoe earlier in the year and had lost so he was looking for a little revenge. Revenge was exactly what Dalton got as he got a quick first-period pin for the win. Next was Bryce Shepperd up against a Knox wrestler. Bryce had pinned him on Senior night and was looking to get the same outcome. Bryce came out strong and was able to get the pin for the win. Next was Preston Toosley up against Culver. Preston had lost to him two weeks ago by and was looking to revenge that loss. Unfortunately, his Culver opponent was able to win again putting Preston in 2nd place.
When it was all over the team race had Triton in the lead almost all day and in the finals standings, they held onto taking 1st. The race for 2nd place was neck and neck all day between us and Winamac. Winamac was able to hold us off to get 2nd and we placed 3rd just 3.5 points behind them.
Kirk Bushong was voted Co-MVP of the meet alongside Malachi Greene of Triton.
