Today was the first day of our eight week preseason. The focus of our preseason is to get ourselves prepared physically and mentally for November. Our guys are using Tim Grover’s ‘Jump Attack’ strength program to prepare our bodies for the 4 month season. It is a grueling season and winter becomes harsh on players’ bodies. Our goal is to get stronger, more explosive, and prevent as many injuries as possible. Day one is always tough. It hurts. It leaves a mark (DOMS). It breaks guys down mentally. However, the mind is a liar, and a good one. Our minds ALWAYS tell us it is time to quit when our bodies have much more to give. Even the greatest athletes in the world battle this. The trick is to listen to your body. Your mind will lie, but the body knows when it is time to rest. And rest is important. We prepare 3 days a week, but the days “off” are just as important for sleep and nutrition. The great ones take full advantage of rest, so they can attack the next training session with a relentless vigor.
Day one is the first step, but it is not enough. Consistent training is what builds athletes. Players who are committed to consistent training will become athletes of awesome power. Commitment is doing what you said you were going to do, long after the mood you said it in has left you. It is hard to commit; many people never commit to anything in their lives. Yet, the discipline it takes each training day to show up, work hard, and listen is what separates the good from the average. Be committed, be disciplined, and be prepared. November is right around the corner.
