Boys Varsity Wrestling · Nuest earns IHSAA Regional Championship, moves on to East Chicago Semi-State

The Trojan wrestlers traveled to Logansport to compete in the IHSAA Regionals. The Logansport regional is comprised of the Twin Lakes Sectional and the Lafayette Jeff Sectional.

We had four wrestlers looking to advance to Semi State and they were; Tristen Sizemore at 126, Braden Nuest at 132, Zion Rodriguez at 138, and Griffin McIlvain at 220.

First up we had Tristen Sizemore up against Johnny Synsael of Attica. Tristen wrestled hard but lost a tough match late in the third period by pin ending his season. Tristen finishes his season with a 26-12 record.

Next up we had Braden Nuest up against Dave Devaney of Faith Christian. Braden wrestled very well and came away with a 16-6 dominating win.

Next we had Zion Rodriguez up against Matthew Bayley of West Lafayette Harrison. Zion fought hard the entire match but was pinned late in the third period to end his season. Zion finishes the season with a 23-15 record.

Next we had Griffin McIlvain up against Clayton Kellley of Attica. Griffin battled hard but unfortunately lost. Griffin ended the season with a 26-8 record, but also ended his career with a 90-32 record.

Braden had Andrew Kline of Lafayette Central Catholic. It was a tight match going into the third period but Braden was able to get a pin with just 32 seconds left in the match. With the win Braden put in himself into the finals match. The finals match for Braden had him up against a familiar foe in Coby Johns of Rensselaer. He had just wrestled him last week in the finals of Sectional and also in the finals of Sectional last year with Braden coming out on top in those two matches. It was a very close match with Braden being able to score key points late in each period to end the match in a tie. Braden secured a takedown in overtime to pick up the win to become a Regional Champion. Braden moves on to Semi-State next weekend at East Chicago.
